Fencing is not hard to learn but takes a lifetime to master. At the end of four weeks you will have an excellent base of fundamentals that will let you compete with confidence against other beginners. The more you fence and practice, the better you will get. We start with the foil which is important for learning basics in footwork and bladework. However, many fencers move on and learn to fence with the saber and the epee. You do not have to be strong or fast to learn the art of fencing.
Fencers wear masks, a glove, a jacket, and fencing knickers or pants. Depending on the weapon they are using, they may also wear chest protectors. A cup is recommended for men. Protective equipment, except for cups and chest protectors, is available for beginner and intermediate students. Advanced students will need to purchase their own equipment. If you have any questions about what equipment to purchase, your instructor will be able to help you make the right choices.
